Location
This photo was taken in Watkins Glen State Park in upstate New York. The park is a narrow winding gorge featuring waterfalls, rocky walls and amazing colors of frees and lichen. I was visiting Watkins Glen with my family and, of course, my camera.Time
My family and I stopped by at Watkins Glen on our way from Ithaca. As such we did not arrive very early, so all the pictures, including this one, were taken in the middle of the day. Luckily, the gorge is so deep and narrow that even in the afternoon sun one can get interesting lighting and play with sun/shade contrasts.Lighting
The lighting in the gorge is somewhat tricky as there is a quite a contrast between sunny and shady areas. Fortunately, one can play on these contrasts and create multi-layered images like this one.Equipment
This image was shot with my Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 18-200 f3.5-4.5 lense. I used no tripod or flash.Inspiration
Like many people I am fascinated by moving water and especially by waterfalls. This waterfall deep in the neart of the gorge was one of the most unusual with water streaming from an opening between the cliffs and breaking at the cliffs on the opposite side. The lighting was very interesting with the very top of the waterfall being lit by sun and the water seemingly carrying this light with it as it rushed down.Editing
I do not believe I had to do any post-processing for this image as it came our just the way I wanted. In my camera bag
I usually carry my camera, a flash and sometimes a couple of prime lenses, such as 50 f1.8.0 in addition to the zoom lense on the camera.Feedback
Look for an interesting angle. Experiment with different exposures (I made 4 shots at various shutter speeds to get the right effect on the water).
