I took the photo in the South island, New Zealand travelling back from Mt Cook to Wanaka. We passed a station with many merino sheep. It was during autumn in April.Time
The photo was taken approaching sunset during the golden hourLighting
The natural light gave a golden glow to the grass and the fleece of the sheep.Equipment
This shot was handheld using a canon telephoto lens 100mm-300mm with a canon 5DMKIV bodyInspiration
I find different varieties of sheep really interesting from Herdwick in the Lake District, UK to Merino’s in New Zealand. Although sheep are common place they are not that often the main subjects of photographs and I was looking for an iconic memory of New Zealand. It had to be merino sheep given there are c.60million of them and only c.5million kiwis! I was trying to capture something that might interest and found this ewe with lamb who presented themselves really nicely to the camera.Editing
Light adjustments in Lightroom, nothing worth mentioningIn my camera bag
This shot was handheld using a canon telephoto lens 100mm-300mm with a canon 5DMKIV body. Normally have a few lenses, filters and tripod etc.Feedback
We were in a car without a plan to photograph anything on route but I did at some point want to try and capture something iconic associated with New Zealand. Came across the sheep station which inspired me to stop and look for a shot that fitted into my aim. Keep your eyes peeled for something interesting!
