I went on a street photography workshop a few weeks ago and was inspired by a new way of looking at things. I have tried in this shot to apply the thinking of making connections with what is around you in a different way. The reality is that the image depicts a back lit wave by the sun during golden hour with winds brushing the top of the water backwards off the wave but could the pattern in this wave appear to be a form of man made of water and fire about to cause chaos?

Behind The Lens

Location

Looking towards Craster from Dunstanburgh castle on the Northumberlsnd coast.

Time

Golden hour just after sunrise

Lighting

The waves were being back lit by a golden sun, and , the sun beams reflected off the spray from the wave

Equipment

Canon 5D Mkiv, 100-400mm Canon lens. Handheld.

Inspiration

I love the energy of waves and the conditions that morning were exciting. High frequency of waves with winds of c. 20 to 30mph ckmjnb off the coastline hitting the waves creating back spray. Combine the sea state, wind with a golden sun it was very inspiring and I wanted to try and capture the energy I was experiencing. A few weeks prior I went on a street photography workshop which inspired me to try and make connections about what I was seeing in a different way. For the actual shot, I tried to capture patterns in the waves that perhaps showed movement and this particular shot hopefully looks as if there is a form of man made of water and fire about to cause chaos harnessing great force and energy.

Editing

Used lightroom. For this image(raw) I tried to show a true reflection of the golden light and all other settings were auto.

In my camera bag

For the blue hour and sunrise shots of Dunstanburgh castle that morning (last Sunday), I had a tripod, lee filter set, circular polariser and a 16-34mm canon 2.8 lens.

Feedback

I always try to plan the weather, sea state, tide and approx. Location in advance using various apps. I did not plan that I would go handheld for the waves which was fun and so when on location be flexible and follow what interests you (and the light!)
