Location
This photo was taken on Lake Ontario in Kingston, Ontario. It was one of the very rare years that the ice on Lake Ontario froze so clear you could see the bottom. It was at the waterfront by the Murney Tower.Time
This was taken at golden hour. I remember my friend calling me to tell she was downtown skating on the lake with her family and the ice was so clear!! I grabbed my camera and headed down there. It's always a little nerve-racking to be on a slippery surface carrying an expensive piece of equipment. It was exciting and terrifying at the same time to be out in the middle of Lake Ontario on glassy ice and you can see the bottom for a long way out! But the light was beautiful!Lighting
Golden hour is magical but you only have a short period before it gets too dark. I was paying more attention to the moment and not as much to changing the settings on my camera as the light was getting low. The image is grainy as a result.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon EOS 60D using an 18-270 mm lens. ISO 400, shutter speed 1/1600 s, and Aperture f5/6, and focal length 100 mmInspiration
The light was so beautiful and it was such a sweet moment watching my friend's son learning to skate on an epic year for skating on a Great Lake.Editing
I edited this raw image in Adobe Lightroom 4. Editing isn't one of my strengths and the image was under exposed. I brought up my shadows to bring out some detail in the Dad's coat (not very well I might add).In my camera bag
I'm a natural light photographer so although I have a flash, I rarely use it. I have since replaced the 60D with a Canon 6D Mark II with an EF 24-105 mm f/4L lens. I recently picked up an EF 50 mm f/1.8 lens and I switch between the 2 depending on what I'm shooting. I just purchased an iphone 12 max pro which I plan on using more as I participate in a lot of outdoor activities and a big camera is difficult to lug around on a paddle board, X country skiing, or during a 4-6 hour hike.Feedback
I consider my self a documentary photographer and sometimes it's about being in the right place at the right time. Lake Ontario hasn't frozen like that since and I'm really glad I got to capture it.
