This is taken in Broughty Ferrry, a small ex fishing village East of Dundee on the East Coast of Scotland. We have lived there since we were married 36 years agoTime
This was taken at 21.57 on 7 July. I love the long nights - in Scotland the further North the later the sunset.Lighting
It was one of those nights when I was hoping for a bit more colour in the sky, but the sky ended up being fairly clear.Equipment
My trusty Canon 5D Mk IV with 16-35 L f 4 .0. I see the exposure was 241 sec at f 16 so obviously I did not use an ND filter : I just used a long exposure to smooth out the water. By the looks of things I also used a grad filter - probably 2 stop.Inspiration
Broughty Ferrry is where we live and we love it. This scene is so typical of the Ferry in the summer time. Interestingly it as taken 2018 before the flood defences were built so this scene is unique.Editing
Brought highlights down and brought shadows up : also used the mid tone curve. Added a bit of vibrance but not much ( I do not like unnatural, over vibrant images). I do confess to having underexposed so this was brought up 1,5 stops overall! In my camera bag
It depends what I'm shooting : for Landscape work ususally just the 16-35 & 24-105 L series f 4.0 lenses with an array of filters - I use Formatt HiTech and find them quite good - they were recommended to me by a Scottish based pro photographer Ian Cameron who wrote a great book, Transient Light.Feedback
As I've said before, you won't get any images sitting in the house! And this image got absolutely ripped apart by several judges in Camera Club completitions; one of them even said it was "taken the wrong time of day" : they are entitled to their opinions but I I'm happy with it. BTW I have commented on other peoples images myself, and always try to be positive and encouraging. There is nothing worse for beginner photographers to have their images trashed by judges or others.
