Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an abandoned church in Norfolk, UK, deliberately chosen to show a contrast between the dresses and the surroundings.

Time

This was actually taken late morning on a very wet and cold December day. It was really that dark outside, barely getting light, pouring with rain. The church roof was mostly intact and provided some shelter. The model was used to posing in such conditions and we had plenty of warm up breaks.

Lighting

I wanted a close burst of light, and with a high roof to bounce off a single speed light was sufficient to light the model. It also made the outside conditions moodier and showed up nicely the patterns in the stonework.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D850, f2.8 24-70mm lens at 55mm, with a Nikon SB700 flash.

Inspiration

We were looking to creat some contrast, between subject and setting, the dress and the stonework. This is a rare capture of Jade smiling and I felt she looked very natural in this pose. I had been looking to add another dimension to my portraiture, and Urbex is a genre I have explored further, placing models in elaborate ball gowns in abandoned buildings.

Editing

I colour corrected the dress and added some contrast, slightly warming the image whilst leaving the background relatively darker and drawing the model out of the background. Other than that, the image is as off camera.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D850, Nikon SB700 speed light, Nikon f2.8 24-70mm lens and a Nikon f2.8 105mm Macro lens. The macro lens is great for close-up images and details. Also plenty of memory cards and batteries for the flash as you can easily shoot 300-400 images and get through as many as 12AA batteries too. The 24-70mm lens is my go to workhorse lens and produces high quality images.

Feedback

Find models who know the area, share mood boards and research the buildings carefully, as some may be dangerous and some may be on private property. There are websites where locations are often shared and tips on exactly where to shoot. Take care when in these buildings and if necessary, get the owners permission.
