Location
This photo was taken in my living room on top of a pool table.Time
This photo was taken in mid-afternoon when the natural sunlight reflecting through the living window is at its strongest.Lighting
Both natural reflected sunlight and the overhead pool table lights were used. This allowed both the side and the top of the car model to be illuminated.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mk IV and a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM zoom lens at 59mm. The camera was mounted on a Slik brand tripod. The model car was set inside of a macro-specific photo box by American Recorder Technologies. The box allowed a bottom and sides of the same color, which eliminated any extraneous photo subjects to enter into the frame.Inspiration
My father passed away in 1994. Among his things was a collection of pewter model cars, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s. I wanted to capture part of his collection, and I selected this 1931 Cadillac Phaeton because of its classic lines and because it had survived the ravages of time and multiple moves with no damage.Editing
Adobe Lightroom was used for editing, but the photo required only cropping and balancing the usual elements of exposure, contrast, shadows and highlights. In my camera bag
My Canon EOS 5D Mark IV always has my Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens mounted on it. That is my go-to lens for the majority of my photos. I also carry several lenses: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (which was used for this photo), Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, and a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. I try to shoot with natural light all the time, but on those occasions where I need an external light source, I use either a Neewer CN-216 LED panel or a Canon Speedlite 580EX. I have tripods by Slik, 3Pod and Manfrotto.Feedback
Macro photography of static objects is made much easier by using a photo box which isolates the subject and allows for greater control of composition, lighting and exposure.
