I took this one evening while hiking with a friend near Scottsdale, AZ early in the spring.Time
I took this in the evening as the sun was setting, and the sky was turning wonderful colors.Lighting
I love the challenge of taking photos with a sunburst in them. When I saw the shape of this cactus, I knew it had possibilities!Equipment
I am a Sony shooter, so I had my Sony A99 camera and the 28-300 Tamron lens, that I love with me at the time. I did not take my tripod along that evening, so I was shooting handheld.Inspiration
I had been in Arizona for a week, and had been looking every morning and evening for the perfect cactus, to get the shot I had envisioned. When it all came together on this beautiful evening, my last night there, I had to have a little happy cry!Editing
I don't do a lot of post processing, maybe just added some contrast to this one.In my camera bag
I have learned, after a couple falls while traveling, to always have a back up second camera and lens with me. So I bring along one of my older Sonys for that. I keep a polarizer and split and a variable neutral density filters also in my bag. I use the Op Tech camera strap system, so I can easily switch form the strap around my neck to a harness strap for hiking. I use a Suri tripod and have a Monfrotto pistal grip head for scenery shots and a ball head for wildlife shooting. I recently bought a bean bag that fits over the door of my vehicle that is a good support for window shots when traveling.Feedback
I had never realized what a beautiful place the dessert can be, especially in the spring before it gets too hot out. I say if you get the chance to travel there and check out the many different types of cacti, that you really should do it!
