Behind The Lens

Location

in the Sahara Desert, in Morocco

Time

It was a morning in Nov. 2018, we had come to Morocco for a tour that included spending some days in a tented camp in the Sahara. That morning we decamped to go on a camel ride, our program director did not go on the ride itself but remained behind, since he had done this many times. I had to get off early because of a hip problem I have, and saw him alone there in the dessert and thought what a good shot.

Lighting

The camera was probably in landscape or automatic mode, the light was not too strong since it was still early, but the sky, desert and he standing there (seemingly in contemplation) made for an interesting shot.

Equipment

Using a Canon T6, probably in landscape or auto mode, shot at f8, 1/400 sec, ISO 100, hand held no tripod, no fill flash.

Inspiration

Just the scene of the program director standing alone in the desert, amidst the sand, with the beautiful morning desert sky

Editing

Some cropping, and slight color correction were all that was necessary

In my camera bag

At that time a Canon T6, Canon 18-50mm lens, a Canon 17-200mm lens, usual extra sim cards, batteries, etc.

Feedback

In most of Morocco (northern Africa) expect brighter sunlight. In the Sahara can use low (100 or 200) ISO because of the light. But even at those ISO settings expect for the shots to be very fast 1/400 or faster at f8 or smaller. Just look and be open to the possibilities that will present themselves, and there will be ample.
