One of my favorite places in the Okba ibn Nafaâ Mosque, in Kairouan, is the portico, one feels an incredible sensation of walking under the arcades, through the pillars, imagining all kinds of events and stories that took place throughout the previous centuries!
This photo shows an interior view of the western portico, showing a succession of arcades and pillars. The floor of the western portico is raised by two steps compared to that of the courtyard. It’s covered with wooden ceilings with exposed joists.
We let ourselves quickly carried away by the imagination and the atmosphere that reigns there until losing all sense of time. I like the mystical side of this place!
