Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Vancouver, Canada from Stanley Park. I am an amateur photographer.

Time

This photo was taken around 3:25 pm in a cloudy January 15th 2014. A friend and I took a half-day break from a meeting to photography in Stanley Park. Even it is cloudy, the water at the bay was quite calm with a low tide. The rocks at the bay were above the water line. Around 3:25 pm, the sun just broke the cloud a bit and shined on water. I took the photo by adjusting the exposure to show the contrast of the lighten-up cloud and the dark water and the rocks.

Lighting

The buildings over the Bay had the blue tune. Therefore, I had chosen the black and white photo to focus only on the shapes. I wanted to show the solid rocks with dark color to remind me the rocks in the Japanese Zen gardens. I left the half of the photo to sky according to the Chinese art tradition of emptiness.

Equipment

This was taken with Sony alpha-200 with 18-70 lens. No tripod was used.

Inspiration

The masterpieces from Ansel Adams are always my inspiration. The movement of the cloud, sunlight and water reminded me the impermanence of the nature beauty and motivated me to catch it in a picture to record to eternal.

Editing

There is no post-processing of this photo.

In my camera bag

I just started to photography in less than two years. Currently, I carried a Nikon D5300 with 18-55 mm lens and a iphone 5s.

Feedback

Photography is mediation for me, which helps me understand the meaning of life and nature. The more I pay attention to the beauty of my surrounding, no matter how small they are, the better I appreciate the uniqueness of each beautiful thing.
