Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas. I was assigned to cover the game by a small local newspaper. I covered a lot of Rice University sports as well as local high school sports.Time
I can't remember the exact time of day, but it was mid afternoon as the games usually started around 1:00pm on Saturday.Lighting
Not really. It was a bright sunny day and for some reason I shot this photo at ISO 250 which is normally higher than I would shoot under these lighting conditions. The problem with shooting in stadiums on a sunny day is that some portions of the stadium and the playing field will be in a dark shadow, which requires an adjustment to the ISO or shutter speed.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IIN and a Canon 300mm 2.8 lens with a 1.4 extender. I also was using a monopod.Inspiration
This running back was gaining a lot of yardage in this game and given that many of the yards were around the end, it afforded me a great opportunity to get some good full body shots of him.Editing
I typically apply a little sharpening to my photos as well as adding some contrast and a little vignetting. In my camera bag
My bag usually contains my 1.4 extender for real close ups in sports like football and baseball. I also usually carry a smaller lens to get some photos after the game when I don't need the telephoto lens. Of course and extra battery and SD card helps in case of an emergency.Feedback
The secret to shooting any sport is to know the game. The more you know about a game the more you can anticipate where the action is going to be. For instance, if I am shooting a baseball game and there are players on second or third base, I am going to position myself for a good shot at home plate because there is likely to be an exciting play at the plate when the runners try to score.
