Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on Lake Cherokee a private lake in East Texas. The view is from the end of my street.

Time

This was obviously taken at sunset, approximately 8:10 P.M. We frequently observe the setting sun from this area as there is little to interfere with the view.

Lighting

The sun is very low and produces the range of color in the clouds. Natures' beauty at it's best. It impressed me that this sunset had such a range of colors from the very warm yellow and orange to the cool blues and purples. The cloud texture helped immensely.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS Mark III with my Tamron 28-300 lens. This was hand held, F9, ISO 250 at 1/4 second. This is my go-to combination even for travel.

Inspiration

I am drawn to color, and this sky had it all. I enjoy the view and sometimes visit with friends as the sky changes. Several of us may be photographing at the same time.

Editing

I don't remember exactly, but in checking the image from the camera, it was only enhanced slightly in Photoshop. I may have added some Nix detail extractor and slight increase in saturation.

In my camera bag

I have several Canon cameras and lenses. I most frequently use Tamron 28-300 with the 5D. (For birding, I have a Tamron 100-600 that I use with Canon 7 or 7D.) I own several tripods, cable releases and other accessories. For trips I carry my 5D mark III with Tamron 28-300 and Canon 16-35 , the 7D with Tamron 16-300. The 7D has a built in flash if needed. I found traveling with a tripod was too much. I prefer the hand held approach. The Iphone is a useful tool for travel too. Weight of equipment is always an issue, so I travel as light as possible.

Feedback

Live on a lake or body of water with unobstructed view. Monitor the sky in the late afternoon and hope all the clouds haven't dissipated by sunset. This was not a stormy sky, but approaching storms can also lead to stunning clouds and color. Be patient as the best color can be after the sun fully sets, and don't forget to look up behind you for other possibilities.
