I leave on a sailboat in the Caribbean so I get a chance to take plenty of boat pictures. We were anchored near this schooner and I knew with the full moon coming up it was potentially going to be a good photo opportunity. I sat out in our dingy on the schooners stern waiting for things to come together.Time
I run on island time so I don’t wear a watch. The night was full on and it happened to be a big moon night. Make no mistake, this picture was planned. I got lucky, the bat was pretty placid so I could use a long exposure.Lighting
I relied on the reflected moonlight. I asked the schooner skipper to leave his mast and stern lights off to avoid bright hotspots. He was okay with my request. I usedEquipment
I used my Nikon D-7000, a 18 to 200 Tamron zoom, and a tripod, no mean feat in an inflatable boat.Inspiration
The sunset the prior night got me to thinking about taking this picture. I took some sunset photos but none of them really grabbed my attention. With the super moon coming up, it seemed like an opportunity. Moon shots are tough, I still struggle but now shoot a D-850 and have a 150 to 600 Tamron zoom.Editing
I added more orange and a bit deeper blue to give more drama. In my camera bag
I upgraded to a Nikon D-850 and have a nice compliment of Tamron zooms and primes. I enjoy macro photography and look for opportunities wherever I can find them. Being quarantined on our boat for weeks on end has really hurt my photography options, but we will be heading to Grenada soon so it should be fun.Feedback
Some shots are right place, right time and others are carefully planned. The best suggestion is get out and shoot and learn how to use your gear and get off automatic. When I got started a few years ago, I found I took the same basic shots all the time. Enter ViewBug’s contests to motivate you to get out and away from your comfort zone.
