Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my front yard with my daughter. Those little purple weeds can be really interesting in a photo.

Time

About an hour before sunset.

Lighting

I waited until the sun was getting low but still bright enough to add a glow to her skin.

Equipment

I shot this with a Sony a7rii and an old manual focus Nikon 180mm lens.

Inspiration

I love the purple weeds that grow in the grass and I thought it would accent her dress nicely.

Editing

I use Photoshop. I enhanced her eyes by brightening and sharpening them, and smoothed her skin a little to give it a soft look. I added a lot of gradients to get the orange creamy tones in the background and to pop out the color of the flowers.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sony a7rii, extra batteries and SD cards. My Sony FE 50mm, Tamron 70-210mm F2.8, Nikon 180mm F2.8, and my Nikon 105mm lens. I do enjoy collecting old vintage manual focal lenses but those are the ones I use the most.

Feedback

I always tell people to look for the random places that pop out to you. I would rather shoot in my yard or on the side of the road than at a park where everyone else goes to shoot. For this type of image I would suggest waiting until spring when these flowers come out and to shot from a low angle. Get on the ground if you have to. Also if you can an aerial shot would also be interesting.
