Behind The Lens

Location

This graceful young lady was perched on a Black Eyed Susan just outside of the back door of our garage. She sat patiently while I took her portrait.

Time

This was taken on an overcast afternoon in early October a few years ago. Looking over the series of images I took that day reminded me of how friendly and relaxed she was with my wife and I standing very close to her and the flower she was sitting upon.

Lighting

The best aspect of the lighting that day was that it was slightly overcast and the colors were slightly saturated throughout the image.

Equipment

Used a Canon EOS 7D and a Vivitar 18-250 lens lens for this image. ISO 100, f4.5, 1/100 second

Inspiration

I'm always looking for little critters in the yard to photograph. The relative calmness of Preying Mantis' is an added bonus.

Editing

Other than some sharpening and a bit of added contrast the only other thing I did was tighten in on the Mantis with a slight crop.

In my camera bag

Number one for me is my tripod and a remote shutter release. As I've progressed in years, I can no longer hand hold my camera reliably. Other items in the bag include a polarizing filter and extra memory cards and batteries.

Feedback

My best advice to novice photographers is to move slowly in the field, look around yourself and be patient. You can miss so much by being in a hurry and not enjoying the experience of being in Nature.
