Location
I took this pictures in Braies Lake, SudTirol, Italy, it was january and the lake was completely frozen and covered by snow, and so were the trees around the lake, so Trudi, my beloved German Shepherd Dog, could run across the lake. The snow was high, so she had to jump to run to me, and this truly made the difference, she seems to be suspended in the snowTime
About midday, but the weather was completely overcast and snowy, so the light was soft , and the snow acted like a giant reflector, I loved it , snowy frosty wheather in mountain is one of my favourite shooting setting.Lighting
iIt was a overcast and snowy day in January, so the sun was low and fully covered by clouds, the light was very soft and diffused, and the snow surface acted like a giant reflector, the subject was perfectly lit by this light.Equipment
My Nikon D750, a full frame camera, very light (750g) , suitable also for hiking and trip due to its weight, it has a well performing af so I coul make this action shot very easily. I matched the super performing action lens Nikkor 70-200 2.9 vr2, a fast professional action zoom lens, I do all my action with it! I shoot always hand free and with no additional light. I was lying down on the snow, so I was dressed with technical mountain wear, to keep myself warm and dry.Inspiration
My Trudi, she is my beloved dog and she is always full of a lot energy, she adores snow and mountains, she is very obedient and so it was easy to make her stay away from me and make her run to me when I called her. The high snow made her jump to run to me, and she really enjoyed it!!Editing
In postprocessing I added some dehaze because the shot lacked of contrast due to the snowy wheather, I saturated and sharpened Trudi's fur to make her pop, added a bluish vignette and some snow flakes with an overlay to enrich the natural flakes that were in the original scene. In my camera bag
My Nikon D750, shooting mate since over 4 years, my action lens, the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 vr2, two portrait lenses, a Sigma 105 1.4 art and a Sigma 35 1.5 art, I love them for sharpness and bokeh! A bean bag, to put my camera on it both when I'm shooting lying down on the ground, but also when I have to take a break and I don't want to put my camera on the ground. Everything to clean my gear, some cleaning clothes and a liquid cleaner specific for lenses, a gym pat to lay down without getting dirty, since I do dog photography , I always carry some toys and treats to work with them :)Feedback
Use a action performing gear, so a camera with fast af and a good lens with wide aperture, in this case, I used the af - c setting with one af point, trying to catch my dog's eyes of course. Lay down to achieve a nice blurry background and foreground, so the subject will pop in the scene. It may be necessary to compensate the exposure with snow, in this peculiar case, I overexposed of 1 EV to get the snow bright up.
