Thank Melissa. This one seemed to capture the way the CA coast actually looks, instead of the "Beach Boys" treatment we so often see...

Thank you Diana. I think the foreshortening provided by the road connecting the foreground to the distance accomplishes just that. The mist as well increases what we might perceive as atmospheric perspective, which also helps. Thanks for the nice comments!

Location
I shot this image from one of the many informal walking trails just west of the 101 in Del Mar, CA, and north of the Torrey Pines bridge which can be seen in the distance.Time
I had been suffering from a cold for about a week, and after showing some improvement, my wife thought it would do me good to get some fresh air and stretch my legs a bit. We parked on Via de la Valle a little after noon, and hiked all over. My best guess at the time of the shot is 2-3pm.Lighting
It was simply a nice day, with a touch of ocean mist common in the winter months. (Sometimes the dehaze slider is your enemy?)Equipment
Since my wife and I were walking all over I just took my Nikon D810 with a Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 mounted on it. My trusty Black Rapid strap, made the going easy. This is a hand held shot...Inspiration
Del Mar is one of the most beautiful towns in SoCal, especially on the coast, so I was inspired by everything surrounding me. It also felt good to be out in the fresh winter air. I felt like I was in a postcard, and this was only one of the views available. In truth here was something worthy to shoot in almost any direction.Editing
I ran the RAW image through "my" basic preset in Lightroom, which simply sets routine sharpening and lens correction for every image I develop. There was no cropping done. The image uploaded to the site was resized to 1600 pixels on the long side, which I do for every image I upload to the web, and saved as a Jpeg with no compression. In my camera bag
Hmmm... I guess this depends on where I am going and what I am planning on shooting. I have three Nikon bodies, a D810, D600 and a D7200, and I will take one, two or all three of them with me based on my needs. I have a single and a double Black Rapid strap, and the double has been modified to support the third body if I so choose. Why multiple bodies you say? I don't like changing lenses out in the field unless I have to. The American Southwest is typically very dry and a lot of dust and particulates are in the air. Multiple bodies allows me to switch cameras vs switching lenses. As for lenses, I have six zooms: Nikon 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm (Tamron) 200-500mm, 16-80mm DX, 10-24mm DX. Sometimes you simply can't zoom with your feet! I also have primes: Nikon 20mm, 58mm, 105mm(Macro), and Sigma 40mm and 85mm, for if I choose to go that route. I usually have Nikon SB-700 flash somewhere in there too... And a tripod!Feedback
Take your camera with you everywhere you go is a simple rule. However, go everywhere with your camera is actually more important. Say to yourself, "I'm going to go there and shoot some," instead of saying, "I'll shoot something if I see something." Shoot anyway. Shoot anything. Shoot everything. Keep turning around to see what's behind you. Don't just take the camera with you when you're walking. Walk where the camera wants to go...!
