Juniperus occidentalis (western juniper) -- a little distraction while recently visiting the twin peaks mustang gather. the land is covered with junipers, some very old and deformed. usually occurs on dry, rocky sites where there is less competition from larger species like ponderosa pine and coast Douglas-fir.
