Tripod is the only way to take photographs just before sunset in order to get a small size aperture of F11 or higher for good Dept of field. Cold fingers is the big worry so a warm pair of gloves that can come off and on quickly. Another thing is a warm hat or toque to keep the heat from escaping from the top of your head. Cold on Vancouver island in January.
