Location
I made this photo at the famous Braies Lake placed in the middle of the Dolomites (Trentino Alto Adige - Italy).Time
I was with a friend, we had a early wake up trying to had a good sunrise in this place, unfortunately there was too much clouds and we doesn't had the sun colors.Lighting
We was there before the sunrise trying to had sun colors on mountains and clouds, unfortunately there was too much clouds so the colorful pics planned became a moody photo. I tried to catch all the details in the brighter and in the shadows parts.Equipment
This was shoot with my Canon 6D mk1, Canon 24 - 105 f4 L, Nisi CPL filter, Manfrotto befree tripod and a triggher for the remote control.Inspiration
I usually was in Trentino but never been in this famous photo spot, so I decided to organize a photo session with my friend. Before this day I take a look to other photographers that was here and I understood that 80% of the photos was really similar. I wouldn't the same photo like the others photographers... so I startet to walk around the lake when we found this river. I choosed this spot to place my gear trying to have the mountains on background reflected in the liquid water, the texture of the trees with the snow on the sides and the water with the textured iced part for the foreground.Editing
In this case I taked a +/- 1stop braketed series that i merged in Camera Raw and Photosop to have the right dinamic range from the white clouds to the trees shadows. I merged them using luminosity masks edited with levels and painted with my graphic pen. Then I only used curves, levels and color correction for the last part of my post processing, always with luminosity masks to edit specifics parts. In my camera bag
The list is long... and the bag is heavy! In my backpack can find: Canon 6D, Canon 24 - 105 L, Samyang 14mm f2,8, Tamron SP Di VC 70 - 300mm, Nisi filter holder v5 with CPL filter and a Nisi soft GND 0.9, circular ND64 and ND1000, Manfrotto Befree tripod, 2 trigghers for remote shutter, Intervallometer. Now I've a new born... the Canon 16 - 35mm f4! Other 800g on my backpac!Feedback
I always suggest to watch the other photographers, to study all the location before to go there, to take simulation with some apps an the most important thig... when arrive on the location to stop for some minutes! Look around, keep all the information and engoy the place without cellulars or cameras! You have to create a memory in your mind and not only a photo! After that can start to watch for the details around, to composite your photo and shoot.
