The red and yellow spot at the base of the bill inspired the name of these Indian spot-billed ducks. They are usually found in pairs. In Maharashtra, they are known as Haldi kumkum.

(Just as we Hindu married women put Vemillon and turmeric dots on our foreheads as a blessing for our husband's presence.)
