Behind The Lens

Location

Kitimat, BC. It's a small town in northern Canada and that's where we both grew up. It was a gloomy fall morning and we were looking for something to do for the day so we decided to take a drive on one of the many back roads in hopes of seeing some wildlife. We didn't see any wildlife but after 4x4ing for a couple hours through mud and trees we came across this gorgeous marsh and hung out for the rest of the morning.

Time

I remember this day very well. We were on vacation visiting family and my husband woke me up at the crack of dawn for for one of his grand adventures. Three coffees later we found the perfect spot just after sunrise.

Lighting

The fog was as thick as pea soup and for most of the drive we couldn't see more than 30 feet ahead. I love the fog but it's not the greatest for picture taking if you want to see wildlife. Sometimes though, the fog and gloomy lighting can really enhance the picture and I think it did with this one.

Equipment

As I mentioned... my husband woke me up super early so all I had time to grab was my Canon sx30is. It's a great camera and perfect for when you don't want to pack a bunch of gear with you. I had nothing else with me: no flash, no filters... nothing. I ended up using the hood of our Jeep as a tripod.

Inspiration

I was in a photography funk (similar to writers block in a way) so I decided to do one of those week long photo challenges in hopes of finding new inspiration. The subject for the day was wildlife but there were none around that wanted to have their picture taken. We were driving forever and just as I was about to give up we came across this scene. It was gorgeous!

Editing

Photoshop has always been my go to and I processed this image in the CS5 version. There was some construction tape in the foreground that had to be cropped out. I was using a point and shoot so shooting in RAW wasn't an option at the time. All I did to this aside from cropping were minor adjustments with saturation and white balance.

In my camera bag

When I'm actually prepared my bag is full with every filter imaginable, my camera(s): a Canon sx30is, Canon T3i, and Canon 4D Mark ii, tripod, a multi-tool, business cards, energy bars, a pen and paper, a small squeak toy (for when you want an animal to look at you) microfiber cloths and of course a few lenses.

Feedback

Be patient and bring snacks and lots of coffee! Lol. When you're trying to capture that perfect moment, it can take a while sometimes so plan ahead for a long haul. Also, don't be intimidated if you don't have top of the line equipment because those perfect shots can be taken with a cell phone. Find inspiration in the little things and if you're in a funk then do one of those online photo a day challenge thingies. You never know what you'll find. Happy shooting!
