Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Montreal during a snowstorm. I remember that year it didn't snow until late December. So late that people were sad about not having a white Christmas. People still got a somewhat white Christmas, but nothing memorable. And then the snowstorm came on Dec 29. There were very few people out. All of them were struggling with something: cleaning cars, driving, walking.

Time

I remember waking up that day, and the moment I saw all that snow, I knew I had to go out and take pictures. This was taken on December 29 2015 at 9:18 AM

Lighting

I'm a self taught photographer, and at the time I was still new and learning the basics. I remember it was hard for me to figure out the settings so the snow wouldn't look too bright and loose details. Until I decided that I preferred having a dark-ish photo that I could edit after, than a very bright one that wasn't usable.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100, with an AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I was born and raised in Venezuela, a very tropical country where you can only see the snow sometimes on the mountains in a particular state. I had never experienced a snowstorm before. That morning I went out and started taking pictures of the buildings and cars with all the snow on them. Then I saw the man walking in the middle of the street, it was impossible to walk on the sidewalk because they hadn't been cleaned yet. He looked to be in his 60's, and watching him made me feel lonely. I thought it was weird to see someone his age out during a snowstorm with groceries in his hands. "Doesn't he have someone in his family that can do that for him?" I wondered.

Editing

I always shoot raw because it makes it easier for me to edit them after. This picture in particular I only had to modify the highlights and shadows. I used photoshop to edit it.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D3100 with its standard lens, and my AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens.
