Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out at Redstone Dunes in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Time

This is one of my and the model's favorite images from this shoot. It was hot in late April and we were able to cool down a bit under a rock overhang in the shade. It was taken just before noon.

Lighting

I find that open shade provides great light when it would be otherwise harsh conditions.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with my Canon 5D, Mk3 and my Sigma 50mm prime lens. No flash

Inspiration

Dasha and I had just completed a set with her kneeling in a small cave. She put on her cover and started a series of posing next to the red rock. I thought the pale skin tone combined with the yellow cover up provided a great color contrast with the red rock.

Editing

I process all of my photos in Lightroom. There was nothing too complicated about this one. I just cropped and added a little contrast.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sigma 50 mm art lens and a Canon kit lens 28-135mm. I try to bring a reflector for those areas where a little added light is necessary, but didn't use it for this photo.

Feedback

Always be on the lookout for textures and patterns in the rock, and like I said look for those areas with open shade that will provide nice muted light on your subject. It doesn't hurt to have a model as beautiful as Dasha along for the trip. :-)
