Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was shot in January 8th 2006 in Western Finland, the city of Akaa.

Time

Two o’clock in the afternoon.

Lighting

In winter, the light around noon is often steep and the snow returns to light. In this picture, light fits in the image and the exposure is successful.

Equipment

The photo is taken with Canon EOS 20D, using Canon 300 F4 objective (F9, 1/800s, ISO 400). I did not use a tripod.

Inspiration

Northern hawk-owls tend to move closer to south in winter. You might see them surveying and preying next to roads and fields. Northern hawk-owl is one of the most interesting subjects to capture pictures of in the winter. The lush branches in the tree create a fine frame for the owl.

Editing

I have done nothing else to the image but the basic adjustments. The same picture as a colored version can also be found in my gallery.

In my camera bag

I normally have my two cameras, includind Canon EOS 1Dx Mark II and EOS R, lenses 500/ f 4 and 100-400 zoom objective. Of course, depending on the situation, various other camera equipment.

Feedback

When you shoot in the cold winter, make sure you do not interfere with the owl's search for food. You have succeeded, if the bird stays in place and only occasionally observes you but continues looking around. The bird must be approached slowly, do not go straight ahead. Avoid direct eye contact.
