Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was shot in April 29th 2017 in Eastern Finland around at 7 PM. During that time of the year, there was still snow covering the swamp.

Time

The photo was shot in April 29th 2017 in Eastern Finland around at 7 PM.

Lighting

The reflection of the snow is beautifully illuminating the approaching raven's wings. The settling sun behind the forest on the background also gave a good adjustment to the lighting. I would say that it was the perfect timing and condition for shooting, since the light was not too strong. Hopefully, the feeling can be sensed through the picture. Snow is really important lighting factor when wanting to have good shots, especially of flying birds. It can be used to illuminate underneath dark wings.

Equipment

The photo is taken with Canon EOS 1Dx Mark II, using Canon 500 F4 +1.4 extender (700mm) objective (F8, 1/400s, ISO 1600). I used a stand.

Inspiration

Birds in general, but especially raven, are one of my main interests to photograph. It is not too often that you are able to get a good shot of the bird, flying towards you in such an ideal lighting.

Editing

I have done nothing else to the image but the basic adjustments.

In my camera bag

I normally have my second camera Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (+100-400 zoom objective) with me. Of course, depending on the situation, various other camera equipment.

Feedback

When photographing a flock of birds, you should first observe them from the distance, and then focus on one. If they are circulating, start following the ones flying away from you. Then you don't waste time on hurrying to capture them, but can have a calm and centered touch on zooming in.
