Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Blue Note in Milano, Italy. This is the best venue in Italy for Jazz concerts and more. A warm club with very kind owners nad managers that allow photographers to work, respecting the people attending the shows. Thanks Blue Note Milano for that!

Time

It was around 10.30 PM. Bill was doing a solo concert, only him and his guitars, a very intimate journey into his music. Bill is a great artist, composer and player. Bill was changing the guitar, so I captured this shot where he is was doing it, he moved like he had a baby in his hands, a moment in time that shows the love of this great artist for his instrument and the Music

Lighting

Blue Note is quite dark, and therefore difficult to shoot, there are spots on the scene, I tried to enhance the two subjects, Bill's face and the guitar, that dance as opposites, while Bill's hand connects the man and the instrument.

Equipment

Nikon D810, which is not the very best for low light shooting, Nikon 70-200 2.8 that is a great lens, very fast and sharp. Original image is 36Mp.

Inspiration

I love to shoot concerts, as I have, since I was 13 yrs old, an immense passion for Music. Photography has enabled me to "enter" in the musicians' world, intelligent and sensible human beings and Artists, and make connection with them and develop some important friendships with some, whose music I loved for my entire life, and some new. When I shoot a concert, it is for me like to be "in trance" with the musicians, and while I listen to the music, I play my instrument to capture their expressions and passion.

Editing

I did basic adjustments in Lightroom, and then the sharpening and final retouch in Photoshop, I like much more Photoshop for sharpening. I do not use presets in Lightroom, I find they generate way too much repetitive results.

In my camera bag

For concerts, I have the D810, now upgraded to D850, with the lovely 70-200/2.8, the 1.7x multiplier, and the 16-35 f4 that (even if it is a landscape lens) I use for the group photos and for some effect shooting very close to the subject, all Nikon lenses.

Feedback

You need to love Music to shoot concerts. This is the reason for me to do it. Play with them and you will do it right. It takes a lot of time and experiments, it is an endless fight between speed and noise, keeping ISO as low as possible, while following the artists that move. Often the results are blurred photos, other times photos that look good in the camera display will be poor on your computer screen, but.. insist... it takes time to learn. Having started with a far inferior lens, the 70-300 4.5/5.6, it was a great school to maximize everything, this resulted in better photos with the 70-200 2.8.
