Location
This photo was taken at a part of the Salt Flats outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Bonneville Salt Flats is a very popular location for photographers because if its potential for beautiful photos.Time
This was a taken in the evening shortly before the sunset.Lighting
This particular evening it had been raining so I was expecting more clouds, but by the time I made it to this spot the clouds had cleared and though I didn't achieve the shot I had in my mind, I was still happy with the results.Equipment
This was either a Canon 7d Mark II or a Canon t4i. No flash was used and it was stabilized by tripod.Inspiration
I have a list of images in my head of shot I want to get out on the Salt Flats. They involve the different ground features the Salt Flats have. I love how this image shows the dirt cracking up after the water had receded and dried up.Editing
While processing my image I lowered the exposure in the sky to bring out more color and I added a some contrast to the ground to bring out the cracks better. There are other little tweaks there but I don't remember. It's my secret sauce so secret that I don't even remember. In my camera bag
I usually pack my bag with my Canon 7d Mark II and occasionally my Canon t4i for time-lapse work. The lens I usually bring are a 24-70mm, 10-18mm, and 70-300mm or a 18-135mm. I keep extra cards in the event that one fails. I pack a Speedlite because you never know when it will come in handy. The last thing I pack is a tripod.Feedback
Do some research before you go so you have some idea what your going to find. If you're going into the desert bring plenty of water for both you and your car. Arrive in advance of your sunset to have time to find the perfect spot. I sometimes bring along my extra camera for time-lapse so I can use my other camera to capture other things while my extra camera is working. Look for pictures in all direction. Lastly, if you don't get the picture you want... Try again.
