Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the banks of the Li River Xingping China. I was hosting my first photographic tour in China, a wonderful small group of photographers and we were taken to such amazing places to get the best images, we had so much fun together. This was just a magic spot and so memorable for its peacefulness.

Time

We were up early 4 am, our Chinese guide met us in the foyer of our small hotel with flasks of hot water for coffee before our cars came to pick us up. Still dark when we left, not too far to drive and then a short walk through a sleeping village to a bamboo raft that took us across the river to the spot where I took this image. We were the only ones there, 7 of us, and we met our fisherman who came with his cormorants.

Lighting

The lighting was extremely challenging for me. Dark when we got there and then gradually it lightened and capturing our fisherman with his lantern was again challenging. The lighting in this one worked well, had to take a lot of shots but happy to get the one image I am really pleased with.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk 1v on a tripod, no flash, 24 - 105mm f/4 11 lens, I use this combination the majority of the time and it gives such wonderful results

Inspiration

How could you not be inspired by such an amazing scene, we just had to be patient when a raft went by and sent ripples across the water, waiting for it to smooth over again. The distant man on his raft draws your eye up through the image which I really like.

Editing

Yes, I always open in Lightroom, all my images were taken in raw, so like to tweak here and there to bring out the best in the image. Then go to Photoshop and crop if necessary to get the best composition.

In my camera bag

Always conscious of the weight of my bag on my back! My husband carries my backup camera of a Canon M5. Plenty of batteries and memory cards, a 100 - 400 f/4 Canon lens, which I use sometimes. Plenty of lens cleaners, spare lens caps.

Feedback

Patience, patience and more patience. Give it everything you have got to get the shot, take plenty of images, try different settings, and you will be sure to get one that you are happy with to make it all worthwhile.
