At least they are not spoiling the background (as it is poor :-)) as the other images do in the contest :-)

Thank you so much! Certain lavenders had much stronger scents than others!

It was eventide in Provence. I am short and as I am shrinking in my old age like most, to give me a better perspective, one of the first things we did upon arrival in France was invest in a portable ladder. This is one of the most photographed fields of sweet lavender outside the town of Valensole, Provence.Time
It is an early July evening. The sun had already dipped down in the rows of the lower lavender fields.Lighting
In Valensole, when the sunset is about to happen the light disappears rapidly. I had about eight minutes of side-lighting opportunity. I found myself finding vignettes of light throughout the fields where as most of the lavender was by now somewhat dulled. Catching the side-lighting was magical!Equipment
Canon PowerShot G3 X Focal Length: 220 mm Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec Aperture: f/10 ISO: 800 Hand held no flashInspiration
Three key ingredients for me are the quality of light, the storytelling, and the presence of what I always try to add to a significant image is that something extra. In this two close friends had gone to great effort to find typical Provence dresses and hats. Doing this together was a highlight of their trip! I loved the way their body language spoke of intimacy. The side lighting on the strands of their hair was that crowning extra.Editing
Having shot Kodachrome slides for many years I really do most of my adjustments in camera. I ride the compensation dial as I do not want burned out highlights. With a zoom lens you can crop in camera. So in this particular image, no I did minor tweaking, that's all.In my camera bag
Far too much. I carry at least four cameras including one for infrared and a small easily portable waterproof camera. Carry a dry bag!Feedback
Pre-visualization. Patience. Look for a fresh perspective. Find a story unfolding.
