Whitby Abbey was originally a 7th century Christian monastery founded in 657 AD by Oswy the King of Northumbria. It later became a Benedictine abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII when it was destroyed in 1540.

This is one of my favourite places, and Whitby is where I spent many childhood (and later) holidays. You captured a nicely atmospheric image here, Colin, and it works very well in black and white. Excellent!

Many thanks for your comments. It really is an interesting place. Unfortunately it was closed for the winter and for renovations and improvements when I visited so I ended up having to try and get myself above the surrounding wall which meant I couldn't quite get the little pond that lies just in front of the abbey at this point.
