The ruins of the Cistercian Monastery of Fountains Abbey are fabulously well preserved and awe inspiring. It was founded in 1132 and was a fully functioning monastery until Henry the 8th caused its dissolution in 1539.
Th size and extent of the structure is quite mind boggling and begs the question about how it was constructed without the aid of todays mechanical aids.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
