Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a solo trip in Namibia. Because I was on my own I was the first into Etosha National Park and it is a fabulous place, the Great White Place. There seemed to be a few popular waterholes and they were bribing with all sorts of game, but if you chose to investigate the less frequented spots there were amazing sightings to be found.

Time

As you can see from the shadows this image was captured pretty close to midday. Not always thought of as the best time, but in this case the harshness seemed to increase the vibrance and contrast.

Lighting

The lighting was, of course, completely out of my hands, but the angles were, at least to some extent. I think that shadows, although pretty much below the subjects, do help add some depth and interest.

Equipment

Canon 1DX with a 200-400f4. I tried with a shorter lens, but the foreshortening looked best to me.

Inspiration

On trips like this you never know what you'll seer when, or where. For some reason there were no other visitors to this spot so I had plenty of time to wait for the bull to spout!

Editing

Very little on this one, just a little bit of contrast from RAW.

In my camera bag

It depends a bit on the practical aspects. I really I like at least 2 set ups for wildlife, one wider, usually D5 with 17-105mm and the 1DX with a long lens. I also usually carry a canon 7-200 f2.8 and lately IU've been trying a Sony a9 which I use with the wider angle lens, giving me the luxury of 3 set ups!

Feedback

Planning and patience. You can't plan for what nature choses to do, but you can put yourself in the best place if she decides to play along with you. Research the likely spots for your target, find out when and where most sightings occur. Check out your chosen post and look, if you can, for hopeful signs. Once satisfied go there and wait.
