Lake Waiau is now the only natural freshwater lake on the Island of Hawai'i (after Green Lake was boiled away from the 2018 Fissure 8 Lava Flow). Resting at nearly 12,000 feet, in the winter when strong storms sweep down from Siberia, our big maunas are covered in snow and Lake Waiau freezes. On this day, the orange rising sun reflects off the small area of clear water, appearing like a pool of lava.
