Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo in one of the display areas of the Assiniboia & District Museum in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan Canada.

Time

I shot this photo at 11:55AM CST (2015 June 30)

Lighting

The lighting was provided by overhead fluorescent lighting set in the metal ceilings in a large display room.

Equipment

I shot this photo hand-held with my point-and-shoot camera - a Nikon COOLPIX P510 V1.0. The camera was set for automatic. The settings the camera automatically used for this photo were f/3.4 1/25 sec ISO 400 Automatic White Balance, Exposure 0 step, focal length 24 mm, Pattern Metering.

Inspiration

I love visiting museums and seeing all the different displays. I am not a vehicle buff, but found it very interesting and enlightening to see the beautiful old vehicles. The colours, shapes, and practicality /or non-practicality of the vintage vehicles were amazing.

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee Pro 6 to to slightly blur the overhead lighting (I found it too distracting.)

In my camera bag

When I shot this photo, all I had with me at work was my Nikon COOLPIX P510 V1.0. When I was working out at the compressor station located in rural Saskatchewan, I always had this camera (along with extra batteries) with me. Now I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G Lens, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-G955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, 50mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens.

Feedback

My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard... even if you have to shoot through the window (this could be an incentive to try to keep your windows clean.) We have some treasures in our own yards we don't often think of photographing. When you are on vacation or even a day trip out and about, take your camera(s) and use it/ them. Go to museums as well... indoor and outdoor displays. There are so many different subjects you can capture. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. When you are shooting, my advice is to also try different cameras, lenses, and camera settings. I shot this photograph in "Auto mode" with the point-and-shoot camera I had with me. (Unfortunately, the only photographic equipment I had with me were my cellular phone and my Nikon COOLPIX P510 point and shoot. If I have a similar opportunity in the future, I would take my Nikon D750 with my Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD lens.) My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera and go out and have fun!!
