One of my favorite places to shoot in California is Hidden Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. The sunsets are just one of the many reasons this place is so magical. Here is a full sunset that made being alone in this valley even more peaceful.

I drove out to one of my favorite U.S. National Parks (Joshua Tree) just to capture this image. I had been wanting to get back to an area of the park knowns as Hidden Valley and knew there were some great, open spaces. I was blessed with some great skies and found this large, fallen Joshua Tree, which helped me frame this shot and lead the viewer's eye.Time
This was taken at sunset.Lighting
The ground dirt in this desert is naturally a little bit of a lighter brown. But during sunrise and sunset it really reflects the colors of the sky and creates beautiful, cohesive images.Equipment
This was taken on my Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm lens @16mm, #manfrotto tripod. And my iPhone for inspiring music. I believe it was a selection of Deftones, which always sets a mood.Inspiration
I love this desert because of its' simplistic beauty and wide-open spaces. There is a sense of peace in this park that is the same, yet totally different than any other National Park in America.Editing
Color correction in Lightroom. In my camera bag
My bag always consists of these staples: Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm lens, Canon 24-105mm lens, Canon 70-300mm lens, Rokinon 14mm f2.8. An assortment of filters, panoramic heads, all kept securely in my Lowepro 350 backpack. I also always carry my iPhone Xs for music. Merrell hiking boots and trekking poles.Feedback
Take what the sky gives you. If it's a partially cloudy day, play up the colors. If it's a bluebird day, I like to think in terms of black and white. And get off the beaten path sometimes. That's how I found this scene. Just be careful to respect your environment while out in the wilds. We can't have these beautiful scenes if we don't appreciate and respect the venue.
