Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia on 3 March 2011 at 12.45pm. As my wife and I had never been to Australia before, we wanted to learn more about their unique wildlife, so we visited the zoo. I’ve always had a fascination for insects and noticed these two spiders on their web. I’m assuming the large one is the female and the smaller one, the male. I noticed that a fly had got trapped in the web. The female didn’t wrap it up to save for later but started to devour it straight away while the male looked on, obviously relieved it wasn’t him - yet!

Time

I took this photo just before we went for lunch ourselves at 12.45pm.

Lighting

It was a grey, cloudy day so the light wasn’t brilliant but as I only wanted the silhouettes, I didn’t think it mattered.

Equipment

I took the photo with my Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ9 camera. F/63; 1/1600; 49.2mm; ISO80

Inspiration

Spiders are amazing, especially the way they build their webs. It’s good to see the result of all their hard work. I was really fascinated when I saw these two with their prey that I just had to take a couple of photos.

Editing

No, I never do any post-processing.

In my camera bag

I only carry my camera in my bag with spare cards and battery, nothing else.

Feedback

A lot of the time, it’s just luck being in the right place at the right time and for that reason, it’s always a good idea to have your camera ready.
