Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the beach on Maui Island, Hawai.

Time

My wife and I were on a wedding anniversary and strolling along this beach after dinner and after sunset. It was a balmy night an extremely pleasant to be on this beach with a slight breeze blowing.

Lighting

As this was after sunset there was limited light but an extremely colourful and moody cloud formations. I focused on capturing this moodiness with the tree silhouette.

Equipment

Nikon D5100, 18-55mm f3.5-5.6. No tripod or flash. Settings f5.6 , 1/125, ISO 200.

Inspiration

Being on an Hawaiian island strolling the beach after sunsets quite pleasurable and the sunset with the clouds and the silhouettes of the trees really set the stage for a memorable walk and this image.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to bring out the colours a bit more and deal with any highlights and did small adjustments on the shadows.

In my camera bag

As this was a vacation to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I travelled high with only, the Nikon D5100, 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. Did not bring any flash as I had the flash on the camera to use if I need some extra lighting. At this time this was about the extent of my camera kit. Now I have a more substantial kit - Nikon D750 full frame and Nikon D500 DX cameras and an assortment of lenses.

Feedback

I found over the years that to have the most chances of capturing an iconic shot you really have to be out there often. Go out with an idea of what you want achieve and look for subject matter, appropriate lighting and optimum view points.
