Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while spending time in the small town of Wiseman, Alaska. I has seen on facebook that had been cancellation of a northern lights tour in Alaska and I decided to sign up for it. We traveled 6 hours north of Fairbanks, to this wonderful little town of log homes and not much else!

Time

This was taken in the middle of the afternoon, as we were out at night looking for the aurora and slept in for the mornings. We had free time in the afternoons to wander around this snow covered winter wonderland, where a few hardy people stay all winter long.

Lighting

There was nothing special about the lighting. I just wandered the trails through the town and shot photos of some of the beautiful little houses and other buildings covered in fresh white snow.

Equipment

I used a Sony A99II and a Tamron 28-300 lens. I love this combination as it covers a wide range, is easy to carry, and not need to be changing lenses. It was shot at 35mm, f/18. 1/4000, and ISO 1000. I was hand holding while walking through the deep snow. I f a person stepped off the trail you sunk in practically to your waist!

Inspiration

I was just happy to be there in the wonderful little town, with a very fun guide, awesome fellow photographers, great auroras at night, and fun things to shoot during the day.

Editing

I did not do much to this. Maybe just adjusted the contrast a bit to brighten it up.

In my camera bag

I have learned to always carry and extra camera body with me. Twice I had the bad luck to fall and drop my camera and had to rely on my spare due to some damage. Besides the 28-300 I do also carry a wider lens, and of course the usual lens wipes, filters, and a micro fiber towel, that has come in handy during wet conditions.

Feedback

I say-don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and just take off on a last minute trip! I have found other photographers to be fun and interesting people and we all have a common goal in mind-to see new sights and capture them with our cameras. I have met some wonderful people this way who now are friend for life.
