Behind The Lens

Location

It was a group meet up and collaboration between local photographers and models. Funnily enough, the Lakewood Heritage Center was holding a free family photo day at the same time. This photo was taken at the Lakewood Heritage Center in Lakewood, CO.

Time

This has come to be one of my favorite images. It was taken as the sun was starting to get lower in the sky and provided perfect lighting. Id say close to 6:00 pm in mid October of 2018.

Lighting

The lowering sun provided great lighting but I wanted to add a bit more in to give the eyes and face some pop. So I used my Rotolight Aeos to add a little more highlight to model.

Equipment

This was shot with a Sony A7iii using an 85mm 1.4 G Master Lens. I also used a Rotolight Aeos.

Inspiration

During the group meetup that I had attended when I got this shot I wanted to bring the viewer in with something a little different. So I had the model lay down on a enclosed bench area. I fanned her hair out to create a bit of a waterfall look from what I saw.

Editing

I try to do very little in the way of editing. I actually tend to stick with Lightroom only. So, with this photo, I did some light skin retouching, added some gradients in for color and edited the eyes to give them even more pop.

In my camera bag

I tend to get a lot of grief for all that I carry in just a backpack. My backpack is pretty heavy on most days. Filled with, Sony A7iii, 85mm 1.4 G master, 16-35mm f/4, 50mm 1.8, 70-200mm 2.8, Rotolight Neo 2, tripod, light stand, flashes, cards, cleaners, wipes, cloths, glass ball, fairy lights and then the Rotolight Aeos in hand.

Feedback

Just think outside of the box and also, dont overthink it. Some of my best shots have come from just winging it. Get comfortable with your models. Once a good rapport is established, it makes shooting all that much easier.
