The crowned eagle is also known as the African crowned eagle or the crowned hawk-eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus). It’s a regal bird, and it does have a crown, at least in bird talk. It’s a picky eater. No lizards for this raptor. Its diet is 90% small mammals. And we’re not just talking mice. It takes small hooved animals such as duikers, bushbok, which can be up to 66 pounds! For this reason, it’s considered Africa’s most powerful raptor.
It lives solely in sub-Saharan Africa and in southern Africa, only in the eastern areas. I took this picture in Tanzania.

I have learned so many things from your descriptions. First off, I can't believe that that bird could take a hooved animal down. Now that's power. This shot is magnificent and does the bird justice. This one eben ruvals that cardinal shot you took. Beautiful and stunning as usual.

It IS hard to believe. I had to see it in writing. Reckon that's why it's considered the strongest most powerful raptor. One strong baby with big old talons!

Thanks, Lizzie. The eagle was perched on the tree right by the track we were traveling on and he didn't pay a lot of attention to us so we had time to get decent shots.
