I took this photo in Malta in a little cave. I used it previously for another shoot - just love how the light falls into it.Time
this shot was taken in the middle of the day, however as it is in a little cave it was in the shade so we used a big sunbounce reflector to get the light we neededLighting
The spot itself was in the shade so I used a big Sunbounce reflector to get the light into the cave and onto the model Aperture f/6.3?ISO 250?Shutter 1/320?Equipment
I used my favourite Canon 5d mark iii and for this image used the 70-200mm on 75mm focal. No flash or tripod but used the California Sunbounce on silver to get extra lightInspiration
I was working with a swimwear designer for this shoot. We wanted some other shots rather than the typical 'beach' image so I suggested the island of Comino that is quite rocky as such and I knew of this spot from a previous shoot. It is quite secluded so you can shoot without people around you plus the shape and colours of rocks worked great with the outfitEditing
I started with lightroom, some minor colour corrections and lighting. I then used Photoshop for all the rest of the retouch. Main point other than the skin smoothening was to get some more texture into the rocks. I love using outdoor locations and I think making them pop as well makes the image stand outIn my camera bag
For fashion shoots I always carry my Canon 5d mark iii and sometimes the mark ii as backup For lenses I use on fashion shoots mostly the 70-200 f2.8 but I also have the 24-70 f2.8 in my bag. Further I usually carry a Sunbounce Reflector with me and a monopod that works perfectly as a stand for the reflector. Other than that, I ensure I have enough memory with me, spare batteries (even if I hardly change), vertical grip that I started to love - more for the extra power less so for the weight.Feedback
Look for good spots and make sure you have good light. If it is a place you can easily visit prior to the shoot, have a look what time of day is the best for light. For me this spot was quite lucky - I couldn't come the day prior so I just hoped for the best. I have to admit though, my lucky part here was a beautiful and talented model and a great swimwear designer. The location can be the best spot there is, if you don't have the model that you want you won't get the shot you want. Guess as always with art, it is more about the subject you are shooting rather than the equipment you use. I don't shoot 1000s of images anymore but as it is digital, I would say rather shoot more than less to ensure you get the images you need. Play with lightroom or similar software and get the look and feel you want - the fine touch comes later.
