Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this self portrait at home one afternoon. I was very bored and wanted to experiment with the new fairy lights.

Time

The time of day for this shot kinda just spontaneously worked out by itself. I shot this at blue hour, but not intentionally... it just so happened to be the time of day that I decided to experiment.

Lighting

There was not a tonne of light around when I shot this. So as you can see I bunched up the fairy lights to illuminate my face a bit in the dark room.

Equipment

I used my trusty old canon 6d with the nifty fifty. I use my 6d for self portraits like this as I am able to wifi connect it to my phone and control the image I’m taking.

Inspiration

The famous YouTuber Brandon Woelfel was heavy inspiration for this. I had been watching his videos before this shoot and wanted to try out some images to practise editing like him also. So basically this shot was a practise shot.

Editing

I used lightroom to edit this image. I used the tone curves to change colours and I found the split toning really helpful to get the nice cool shadows and warm highlights.

In my camera bag

At the time this shot was taken a few years ago... all the gear I had was my 6d, 50mm and tripod. Where now I have a bit more gear and my new favourite lens is the 85mm.

Feedback

I really think taking time out to experiment and play around is always super beneficial. This image was taken in my early photography days where I always did mini shoots of myself to practise shooting and editing styles. And an image like this is super simple to achieve. So keep shooting and trying things out, as sometimes you get great images from little nothing shoots.
