We specifically wanted to make use of this circus tent while it was in town, so we ventured out to the car park behind it to use it as the backdrop.Time
For this photoshoot I really wanted the soft light of blue hour. So as the sun began to set I gathered the models and we made a dash across town. The best photo shoots always hav an element of craziness.Lighting
Being a natural light photographer you Hav to work around the weather. I wanted soft light, and given we were in our sunny season, that meant blue hour had to be the go. I wanted the final image to reflect that moody dusky time of day.Equipment
I shot this with my canon 6D and 85mm f1.8. Which is my favourite portrait setup. And then just natural light only.Inspiration
Recently on social media I’ve seen a bunch of real life looking portraits done with a carnival backdrop. Here in New Zealand we don’t have many things along those lines. So when I saw this massive circus tent set up, it inspired me to make the effort to go out and create something like what I had recently seen and really liked on social media.Editing
So I love lightroom. And I love playing around with colours and creating new moods for my images. I shot this at blue hour, but my style is still very much towards the warm tones. So I actually used a preset from the talented Julia Trotti. I knew it has real golden tones and is made for portraits shot under soft light. So I applied the preset as a base and made my own adjustments to taste. In my camera bag
I Hav a pretty basic kit. But that’s all you really need. I Hav a canon 6D which has been such a great lightweight full frame to use. And I basically always use only my EF 85mm f1.8. I’ve found over the years that I love the compression of 85mm and am now so used to it.... I can’t really shoot with anything else.Feedback
I think the biggest thing with photography is making the effort. I Hav so many ideas that I Hav stores up in my brain, but never make the effort to go out and do them. But for this image I knew the circus tent was going to be taken down and if I wanted to use it I would Hav to take some time out and go make it happen. And I think that’s something all photographers should keep in the forefront of their minds. Because if we see an opportunity, we must take it. If you have an idea, put it into action. Keep creating and always take time to create the images you want.
