Behind The Lens

Location

Bonnington Falls are on the famous River Clyde near the World Heritage Site at New Lanark. The flow of water varies from a raging torrent you can hear from a distance to a picturesque flow as shown here depending on the season and the amount of water being diverted to power the hydro electric power station just downstream. It is situated within beautiful woodland and is a place I love to spend time at with my camera capturing the beauty of nature.

Time

It was taken late afternoon.

Lighting

The image was taken late afternoon whilst the sun was low in the sky creating atmosphere and long shadows

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D MK4 with my 16-35mm lens mounted on a tripod. Shutter release was by remote control.

Inspiration

I had often visited this place whilst growing up and had fond memories of it. I wanted to revisit and try and capture the essence of the power and beauty of the river.

Editing

I only did basic processing in light room of the raw file. I started by correcting lens distortion and chromatic aberration and levelling the image. Brought down the highlights and the whites whilst bringing up the shadows and blacks. This was filled by clarity and dehaze adjustment and minor tweak to the temp.

In my camera bag

Normally I have my Canon 5d mk4 body, a 16-35mm lens which is my go to lens for landscape, my 24-105mm and my 100-400mm with 1.4x converter. Other than that I always carry a spare battery and several spare cards.

Feedback

Plan to spend several hours there until the light is just right. Refine your settings by taking a series of shots until you get the look you are seeking. Don't be afraid to experiment
