Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio, it really is just a small table next to my desk. As I don't have that much space I usually tend to keep the objects I shoot as small as possible.

Time

This was taken at night just so I could have the whole room as dark as possible. The only lightsource was from the match.

Lighting

In this case the only light-source came from the match itself.

Equipment

I used my old Canon 5D with Sigma 105/f2.8 macro lens, the camera was on a tripod and I used a remote trigger. There was no other lightsource except the match itself. It took a box of matches to get the exposure, timing and finally the exact moment where the match is lit. I clamped the unlit match on to my fly-tying vice and lit the match with a cigarette-lighter. The trick was to get the timing right at the exact split-second when the tip of the match lit up.

Inspiration

I got the inspiration when I saw some film-clip of a match that lit up in slowmotion.

Editing

The only post-processing I did was to bring down the highlights and I darkened the background a bit. All done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I upgraded my old Canon 5D to a Canon RP with the 24-105/f4 kit-lens. Other than that I have my Sigma 105/f2.8 and sometimes I bring my 10-16 EF-S lens if I need some wider shots.

Feedback

Bring a lot of matches :)
