Behind The Lens

Location

We were visiting our friends in Rovaniemi, Finland. They are living by a lake, which formed a beautiful mist in the early September mornings.

Time

Our son used to wake up between 5am and 6am, well before the friends we were visiting. The mist at the lake was awesome and the sun was rising at about 7am. I took my camera and went to the beach. Half an hour later I had a bunch of wonderful pictures and numb fingers, since it was already sub-zero Celsius.

Lighting

Natural sunrise with interesting clouds.

Equipment

I shoot with Olympus E-PL7, usually handheld and autofocus. For this picture I had the cheap Olympus 40-150mm mft zoom objective attached.

Inspiration

Beautiful sunrise, wonderful mist and the birds about to start migration.

Editing

I did crop, switch to black & white and do the basic levels adjusting for the raw image. I try to keep my photos documentary in a way I don't do partial edits, but all contrasts and values are done for the full image.

In my camera bag

Nowdays I carry Olympus E-PL7 with 14-150mm zoom usually attached. Also in my small Lowepro bag: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and some 7.5mm fisheye. I have a circular polar filter and a small extension tube for surprising macros. Usually I also have a 15cm tall tripod with me.

Feedback

Cold autumn mornings, when the sky is clear are my absolute favorite times to go for camera trips. One may encounter frost, mist, migrating birds, frozen ponds and what not. So, first thing in the morning when you wake up: look outside and check the temperature. If the weather looks promising, take a short walk outside or take your camera with you when going to work or taking kids to daycare.
