Location
This image was taken at the edge of a quarry up in the mountains in Mexico about 2 hours outside of Mexico City.Time
This image was shot at sunset. The colours were shifting about frequently as the sun was setting and the sun set quite quickly up in the mountains. I kept shooting as quickly as I could using different settings to get the effect I was looking for!Lighting
It was all natural light .... the setting sun after a gloriously beautiful and sunny day!Equipment
I shot this image using a Nikon D500, a Nikon 70-300mm lens, no tripod, hand held and no flash. I shot the image at ISO 800 and shot several images using different f-stops and shutter speeds.Inspiration
We had been out shooting all day at several locations. It was hot day and we were all getting tired and hungry. We were at a small quarry at the end of the day and the shoot was not going well. We all wanted to head for "home" for dinner and rest. We asked the cowboys to walk their horses along the edge of the quarry with the setting sun as backlighting. It was a few minutes of pure magic before lost the sun altogether. I wanted to capture the feel of tiredness by both the cowboy and the horse after a long day out hiking and shooting in several locations. We were all a little bedraggled at that point!Editing
I generally do very little post processing. With this image though I bumped up the vibrance and saturation and darkened the cowboy and the horse to get a true silhouette. In my camera bag
I carry my Nikon D500 and either a D810 or a D750 with me at all times. As I am generally shooting moving objects, I always carry telephoto lenses with me: a Nikkor 200-500mm lens, Nikkro 28-300mm lens, Nikkor 70-300mm lens, and a 24-120mm lens. This variety of lenses cover most of what I am shooting at any given time. I also always carry rain covers, brushes, cleaning cloths and cleaning fluid.Feedback
Shoot! Shoot! Shoot! Shoot using different settings and look at the image in the back of your camera and your histogram to see the effect of the different settings and to see if the settings are achieving the look and feel you are looking for.
