Location
This image was shot in front of Skógafoss Falls in southern Iceland.Time
This image was shot around the noon hour. A friend had arranged for the horses to be brought to the falls so that a group of us could experience the fun of shooting magnificent horses in front of one the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland! Even though it was a weekday, it seemed that bus loads of tourists arrived just as we started shooting!!!! Needless to say, we were quite challenged with photo bombers, interruptions and people jumping in front of us to take pictures!!! Despite the challenges, we were able to get some great shots!Lighting
The lighting varied as clouds kept shifting over head, then it would rain, get sunny again and then get cloudy again. On top of that, there was a lot of mist from the falls. we were constantly changing our settings but at least the varied lighting gave us plenty of opportunity to get a variety of shots.Equipment
I was shooting with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 70-300mm lens. I used no tripod and no flash. I shot at f5.6, shutter 1/640 and focal length 1000/10.Inspiration
The group of us equine enthuiasts and friends had been in Iceland 2 years earlier together. We had spent much of our time up north and this time wanted to spend some time in the south before heading north again. A friend had arranged for the horses to be brought to the falls so that our group could experience the beauty of Iceland along with the amazing Icelandic horses. Is is such a pleasure to capture nature in so many forms!Editing
I did have to do post processing. The biggest challenge was removing all the photo bombers; however, it was well worth the effort! I also added vibrance and some saturation to help the colours pop.In my camera bag
These days I normally carry a Nikon D500, Nikon D750 and a Nikon D810. Depending where I'm shooting and what I'm shooting, the lenses I carry vary. As I shoot a lot of quickly moving subjects, I tend to carry a variety of telephoto lenses: Nikkor 70-300mm, Nikkor 18-300mm, Nikkor 18-200mm, Nikkor 200-500mm and a Nikkor 24-120mm.Feedback
As weather is constantly shifting, remember to constantly check your settings and adjust accordingly. The histogram is a very useful tool to aide in adjusting settings. I shoot only manually as, for me, I have total control over how I want the image to look. Shooting on aperture or shutter priority can be good too but you have to accept what the camera software chooses for some of the settings. fIt is always good to shoot a few frames first and check your results before shooting more images. I have certainly learned over the years that it takes practice and patience. I have also learned that with practice and patience, what we perceive through the viewfinder changes too!
